Katunguru gate is located in the northern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park and it is one of the most commonly used gates to enter the park. The gate is just next to Rutanda and is the main entry gate to Mweya Peninsular for those without their own transport can be frustrating, to say the least.
Katunguru gate is the best route for visitors who are hoping to go to Mweya Peninsula. Mweya Peninsula is situated on the northern bank of the stunning Kazinga channel where it merges with Lake Edward. The peninsula region joins the channel track distance down to the main gate of Katunguru from where it transversely moves to Kabatoro gate.
The gate takes you to the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park and is surrounded by the magical Rwenzori Mountains aptly described as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’.
Mweya Safari Lodge has the main entry gate known as Katunguru gate and this is the most luxuriant lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park. So, Katunguru gate is the shortest distance to Mweya safari lodge, located on the peninsular overlooking Lake Edward and Kazinga channel. You can watch the forest hogs grazing the grass outside, as well as the odd curious hippos.

Queen Elizabeth National Park which is approximately 1,978 square kilometers (764 sq mi) is one of Uganda’s oldest national parks formed officially, along with Murchison Falls National Park in 1952. It is understandably Uganda’s most popular tourist destination located in the western region of Uganda, spanning the districts of Kasese, Kamwenge, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri.
Visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park always complement their visit with a gorilla trekking safari in the nearby Bwindi Forest National Park or a chimpanzee trekking expedition in Kibale National Park. Others could opt for a boat cruise on the Victoria Nile to Murchison Falls.
